Reproduction and Use

Reproduction of Materials

Atkins Library Special Collections and University Archives allows scanning and photography of our collection materials in the Reading Room, except in those cases in which our staff determines these activities may cause damage to the materials, misplace materials, disrupt the order of materials, or disrupt other researchers. Our scanning equipment is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Researchers may be asked to limit their scanning time if others are waiting.

We also provide fee-based reproduction services. To request photocopies or scans for use in private study, scholarship, or research, please us the Photocopy Order Form. To request high-quality reproductions of print, manuscript or audio materials, please use the Digital Reproduction Order Form.

Use of Materials

For uses of reproductions beyond private study, scholarship, and research, requesters are responsible for understanding and complying with U.S. copyright law. The Society of American Archivists offers this online brochure about copyright law as it pertains to unpublished materials.

Materials in the public domain may be used freely. For materials under copyright, some uses may be consistent with fair use under U.S. copyright law. For those uses that exceed fair use, those users must obtain permission from the copyright holder. We are not able to handle requests to conduct research to determine copyright holders. The US Copyright Office offers this guide to investigating the copyright status of a work.

In some cases, UNC Charlotte may own the copyright to the materials we own, and in these cases we invite researchers to request permission using our Permission to Publish Form.
