Plan Your Visit

Special Collections @ Atkins Library is dedicated to providing quality services to assist researchers. We also have the best view of campus!

Class Visits, Instruction or Tour

Special Collections welcomes students and faculty from all academic disciplines to learn how our rare and unique materials can be incorporated in their research and learning. Class instruction sessions can range from a general introduction on the use of primary sources to customized curricular support that meets the specific needs of any undergraduate and graduate course. To schedule a Special Collections instruction session, email us at                      or call 704-687-1170.

Please contact us if you would like a brief formal introduction to the history of the University and/or the Special Collections Reading Room.

Reading Room

The Mary and Harry L. Dalton Rare Book and Manuscript Reading Room is open to the public Monday-Friday from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Although those using special collection materials have priority, the room is available for quiet study. We ask that visitors refrain from cell phone calls or other disruptive talking, and also to help us protect the unique and irreplaceable materials in Special Collections by not bringing food and drinks into the Reading Room. Upon arrival, each visitor will sign in and fill out a patron registration form which indicates that they agree and will comply with the Special Collections policies.

Request for Reproduction of Materials

To request reproductions (photo copies or digital images) of any collection materials, please review the Reproduction  & Usage Policy, consult Reading Room Staff and complete the Reproduction & Usage Request Form. Once you know the items you would like reproduced, use the Material Information Form to record your requested items.
