Special Collections staff welcomes students and faculty from all academic disciplines to learn how our archival materials can be incorporated in their research and learning.Class instruction sessions Connecting Collections to Classes, can range from a general introduction to the use of primary sources and archival materials to customize courses that meet the specific needs of any undergraduate and graduate course. We prefer you contact us if you would like a brief formal introduction to the history of the University and/or Reading Room that house our phenomenal Rare Rook, Map and Manuscript Collections.
The Mary and Harry L. Dalton Rare Book and Manuscript Reading Room is open to the public Monday-Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm. The Reading Room is a Quiet Zone at Atkins Library. Although, people using special collection materials have priority, the room is available for quiet study, no cell phone calls or talking are allowed. In addition, to protect the materials food and drinks are not allowed in the space either. Upon arrival each visitor will sign in agreeing that they understand and will comply with the policies mentioned. Researchers wishing to use Special Collection materials will complete a Patron Registration Form agreeing to follow the Policies and Procedures for the Use of Collections. The patron registration form can be competed at any time. To locate your form and requested materials efficiently when you arrive, please present a photo ID.
Request for Reproduction of Materials
The Mary and Harry L. Dalton Rare Book and Manuscript Reading Room is located on the top floor of the tower in the J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte. Elevators to the 10th floor are available from the ground floor near The Library Cafe or from the first floor to the left of the main entrance. For assistance in locating the elevators, please visit the Information Desk. Parking is available in any visitor's lot. The Cone Visitor Parking Deck is closest to the Library. The cost for the Cone Visitor Parking Deck is $1.00 per half hour and $10.00 maximum per visit.
