Special Collections and University Archives at Atkins Library is dedicated to providing quality services to assist researchers using our rare and unique materials. Come visit us and enjoy the best view on campus!
The Reading Room
We offer access to all of our materials in the Mary and Harry L. Dalton Reading Room, located on the tenth floor of the library. The Dalton Reading Room is free and open to the public, and we welcome researchers from across campus, the region, and the world. Although those using Special Collections and University Archives materials have priority, the Reading Room is available for anyone seeking a quiet place to study. We ask that all visitors refrain from cell phone calls or other disruptive talking. We also ask that visitors help us protect the unique and irreplaceable materials in our care by not bringing food and drinks into the Reading Room. Upon arrival, each visitor will sign in and fill out a patron registration form indicating that they agree and will comply with Reading Room policies.
The Reading Room is located on the 10th floor of the J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte. Elevators to the 10th floor are available from the ground floor near The Library Cafe or from the first floor to the left of the main entrance. The Cone Visitor Parking Deck is the visitor’s lot that is closest to the Library. The cost for the Cone Visitor Parking Deck is $1.00 per half hour and $10.00 maximum per visit.
Atkins Library Special Collections and University Archives is committed to providing all patrons with access to collections and services. If you require special accommodations to access Special Collections and University Archives materials, call us at 704-687-1170, or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Instructors who require an accessible location in Atkins Library to offer instruction with our materials should make this request when scheduling an instruction appointment, and we will make accommodations.
Accessing Materials on the Main Floor
Access to Special Collections and University Archives materials is generally offered in the Mary and Harry L. Dalton Rare Book and Manuscript Reading Room, located on the 10th floor of Atkins Library. For those library patrons who wish to use these rare and unique materials, and who cannot access the 10th floor or who need to make use of assistive technologies, we will be happy to provide access to materials, technology, and research help in an accessible room on the main floor of Atkins Library or an alternative accessible location in Atkins Library. Please schedule an appointment at least 24 hours in advance by email at email@example.com or phone at 704-687-1170. Because of limited staff and room availability, we may not be able to accommodate immediate requests for access to materials in a different location than the Dalton Reading Room.
All Special Collections and University Archives patrons will be informed of and asked to follow Dalton Reading Room policies, which include completing a patron registration form.
The following assistive technologies are available on the first floor of Atkins in room 101C:
CCTV video magnifiers
Dragon Naturally Speaking
To use assistive technologies with Special Collections and University Archives materials, please schedule an appointment 24 hours in advance with Special Collections staff in person, through email at firstname.lastname@example.org, or phone at 704-687-1170.
