Photographs

Atkins Library Special Collections and University Archives holds several collections which are predominantly photographs and many additional photographs that are found in other manuscript and university archives collections.

Significant Photograph Collections:

  • The William H. Sumner Collection includes photographic prints and negatives documenting the work of a photographer active in the Charlotte area. It is one of the more frequently used collections for early Charlotte photographs. Select Sumner images can be found on the Atkins Digital Collections site.

  • The Steve Perille Photograph Collection consists of the professional and personal photographic work of Steve Perille, a photojournalist who worked for the Bloomington Herald-Times, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and the Charlotte Observer. The collection is more subject-centered than geographically-centered. Select Perille images can be found on the Atkins Digital Collections site.

  • The Bryant McMurray Motorsports Photographs contain images of motorsports races, personalities, and events shot between 1969 and 2016. Capturing NASCAR, IMSA, Grand Prix, and other races, victory lane celebrations, pit crews, and motorsports fans in the grandstands, the collection offers a portrait of motorsports culture spotlighting a range of diverse participants. Many photographs are already available in our Goldmine digital repository.

  • Some of our most popular photographs are a part of the University Archives.  They document the early years of Charlotte College and the development and growth of UNC Charlotte.
